My backpack's got jets

Sorry for the month long sabbatical! Cara and I have been adjusting and preparing for the last long haul. It is now officially our last semester in college! Instead of discussing the oh-so-many ways in which my years of academia have been useful for me in preparation for the future, I would rather talk about one of my favorite things...Nerds, Geeks, and Star Wars!

Okay, so recently I was thinking about learning and how television and pop culture fit into this realm of new media. When someone says the words: "nerd" or "geek" what do you first think of?

So, let's be real, I'm a nerd or a prefer Geek Chic. I told someone this and they thought I was being derogatory on how I viewed myself. I am proud to be a nerd! It is not something that holds a negative connotation or a positive one. It just is a fact.

Since I realized that I'm not even on the surface of being the ultimate nerd, with yoda-like wisdomosidity in all things nerd, I started doing research. I wanted to know what qualified in becoming the ultimate nerd, so in other words, I started "geeking out" on how to be a geek. (Silly I know...) I discovered that there is no right consensus. There are endless mediums and explanations for nerd-culture.

On a side note: this is a really neat graphic that I found that was the most all encompassing. <http://9.mshcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/The-Evolution-of-the-Geek.jpg>

Anyways, has the term geek become associated with being an expert in a particular field? If this is the case, then everyone is a geek at something. I would hope that everyone has excelled in some sort of field. I'm not just talking about a scholarly advancement of trades or knowledge, but anything. It could be a hobby or a social skill or some sort of street smarts that you cannot learn from simply books.

Either way, I conclude by suggesting that everyone could be classified as a nerd or geek in some way. You might not go to Comic Con every year, but you might know something so well that you are now an "expert" in that area of expertise, which makes you that nerd.

There is something endearing about being labeled as the underdog in our culture. From now on geek and nerd is a compliment for me. I may be a fashioista, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, video game playing, D&D dice rolling, film snob, fairy tale connoisseur kind of nerd, but I like that!

Cascading down your Wishing Well

The holidays are that time of year when you reminisce. It is the good, the bad and the ugly. There is that hated question: “What are you doing now?” Then you have to make up something clever thing to make sure you are worth a damn. Then the next question: “Oh you’re graduating in the Spring; what do you want to do with an English degree and a film minor?”

So, winter break time is that time when you are supposed to be figuring it all out; catching up on your leisurely reading or that favorite TV show that you have been neglecting. This always is the good intent, but that never happens. Because then all of a sudden all your friends that you haven’t seen since high school give you a blast from your past. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing everyone that I haven’t seen in awhile, but it’s the sort of guilt that creeps up your chest. We all know the I-feel-bad-I-haven’t-kept-up-with-this-person feeling and how-did-this-get-all-awkward-all-of-a-sudden.

There is an easy explanation to this. People change. It is inevitable. I am not the same girl I was four years ago in high school. Hell, I am so different from this time last year even. The best kinds of friends are the ones who are so easy to see again and do not have that lingering effect of guilt or as if you are complete strangers now. The ones who genuinely care about not only the person you were, but respect the person that you have become. I want to believe that most of the people I have re-hung-out with over break is like this, but sometimes it’s nothing, but twitchy smiles and you know right after you leave each others’ presences you are sighing with relief.

I guess that what the Holidays are about. Not just the buying and re-gifting presents, but genuinely appreciating the moments that you get with people. Whether you see them every day or once in a red and green blue moon. Happy Holidays!!

Merry Christmas with Shirts!

Its December and we're all looking for the perfect (cheap) gift to get out loved ones and those we spend a little too much time with. If your looking for a fun, cheap gift that you don't have to leave the house to buy here is my suggestion!

T-shirts!

Its no secret that I have a bit of a obsession with T shirts, something the fashion world would disown me for, but its true. T shirts are practical and with fashionable accessories they say just as much about ones personality then a cute dress or fancy fringe shoes.

Usually I'd point you all in the direction of Teefury which has a different shirt every day for $10. But it can get frustrating if they don't offer the RIGHT shirt at the RIGHT time. So here is what I'm telling all of you. Threadless.com is having a $10 sale on their artistic and geeky shirts. Below are some of the highlights I found (and would like to see in my stocking this year.)

Hello Pum-To my- Kin!

I LOVE Fall! You know why? BEcause I love sweaters, and vests, and scarfs, and tights, and jackets. Its not so cold that I'm miserable, but chilly enough that I can cuddle into layers. LOVE IT! So needless to say I've been so excited to where all my sweaters and things. Still keeping up with the 60's love if you can't tell from my shorts in this photo shoot and my reindeer sweater. Both I bought at Forever 21, which when I walked in seemed to be in the same mood as the rest of the fashion world this season and have everything sixtiefied.(I just made that word up!)

Again, I guess my look makes me out to be a sixties glamor prep school attendant, but I freaking LOVE it! If only I had dressed like this in all those awkward years of high school .

Tell the Leaves, and I'll consider

I know I know, on my end I haven't been updating that much. But that will all change now!

So first of all, its NOVEMBER already. Which is one of my busiest months, getting ready for the next semester, nanowrimo, tests, papers, and filling out applications for all the junk I plan on doing after graduation (this spring baby!) Despite how busy I am, I still find the time to dress nice and show a little flavor for the fall. This is the complete opposite from semesters in the past where I would be so busy and tired I would just go to class in simple sweats and T-shirts.

But I digress. This fall my theme is 60's fabulous. With all the 60's influence present on Project Runway this year, my new found obsession with Xmen First Class (set in the 60's) and my heavy influx of 60's music I've been gravitating towards more 60 clothes. You can see it in my outfit of choice here, the poodle sweater, my ruffles, and off course my giant glasses.

I also really like the fact that I felt like some rich school prepster. Full outfit pictures down below! Enjoy!

Come Back as Fire

Let's talk about closets today!

I am a firm believer in Organized Clutter! This means that you know where everything is, but no one else may understand your methods-and-ways at first glance. My closet is something that needs to stay fresh. I like to keep things organized, in my own clever way. I have things grouped by what they are...dresses, long sleeves, tanks, jeans, purses, underthings, etc... I used to make sure everything was color coated, but I do not have the time to be so meticulous anymore. Although, I still make sure to use non-wire hangers, it keeps clothes less limp.

I have recently invested in organizational things. I got some under-the-bed storage systems to put all my crafty things in. I bought a purse holder that hangs in your closet. I also have a belt hook that hangs up and a rack of shoe cubbyholes that hang up. There are hooks on my wall for my jewelry. At the back of my closet, I have a sash that holds my headbands and sunglasses! It looks cute and has easy access to what I need, when I need it. I am constantly cleansing things that I don't need.

I don't want to become a hoarder or so dependent on material things, but I do take pride in making sure I look my best everyday. It helps to keep your space, room, and clothes clean. I do love the smell and warmth of laundry!

I'm very serious when it comes to clothes. Growing up with an older sister there was always a fight over "borrowing" clothes. We would catch each other wearing each others clothes and then Bitch-it out over the justifications of stealing or borrowing or asking to wear each other pieces.
Now-a-days, I'm more lenient with letting people wear my things, but I want them to ask, not take. It's all about the R-E-S-P-E-C-T, for others, yourself, and your things!
